US: Aid to Ukraine will continue ‘unwavering and unwavering’

Jake Sullivan assured that nothing will change after the US midterm elections

The Counselor White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan assured today, during an emergency visit to Kyiv, that US support for Ukraine will continue “unwavering and unwavering” after Tuesday’s midterm elections to renew Congress.

“We intend to make sure that the resources are there for as long as it takes and that we have the votes of both parties to make that happen,” Sullivan told reporters.

Some Republicans are calling for a cut in US aid to Kyiv if their party secures a majority in Congress in the Nov. 8 election. Last month House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy said Americans should not “sign a blank check” on Ukraine.

But Sullivan, who met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said President Joe Biden has pledged that “under any scenario” economic and humanitarian aid and security support will be maintained.

“I am sure that (…) the US support for Ukraine will be unwavering”, he stressed.

The Pentagon later announced it was sending a new $400 million military aid package.

Military and economic support from the US and other Western countries is vital for Ukraine as it tries to fend off the Russian invasion that began on February 24. Yesterday, Democratic Senator Chris Coons and his Republican colleague Rob Portman visited the Ukrainian capital in an effort to show bipartisan US support for Ukraine.

Germak commented that today’s meeting with Sullivan was “very important” and that Ukraine’s partners “fully understand our situation.”
