First death from the Omicron variant in the United Kingdom

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

The first death of a vector of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom has been confirmed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Visiting a vaccination center in west London on Monday morning, Mr Johnson said: “Unfortunately yes, Omicron is producing treatments and unfortunately at least one patient has been confirmed to have died from Omicron.”

“So I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of this virus, I think this is something we have to put aside and just acknowledge the great pace at which (the spread) is accelerating among the population. “So the best thing we can do is to do all the boosting,” added Boris Johnson.

Earlier, Health Minister Sajid Javid had said that there were “about ten” Omicron patients in England.

As announced, later in the afternoon, Mr. Javid will inform the House of Commons about all the latest information regarding Omicron.

The Prime Minister also revealed that 40% of coronavirus cases in London are of the Omicron variant and as he said by tomorrow Omicron will now be the dominant variant in the capital.

Mr Johnson has three times avoided ruling out more restrictive measures to curb the spread of Omicron before Christmas.
