Borrell’s warning: To avoid any new conflicts in Europe

by

“Since Putin failed to conquer Ukraine, it is obvious now that he intends to terrorize the Ukrainian population and destroy the country,” said Josep Borel

While the war in Ukraine is ongoing, “we must help to avoid any new conflicts in Europe”, emphasizes the EU High Representative, Joseph Borel referring to the Western Balkans. In the new post on his blog as a follow-up to what was discussed at the G7, he notes that “in recent months we have seen repeated tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, especially on the issue of license plates” noting that last week he proceeded to submit a proposal – supported by France and Germany – to interested parties.

“Discussions on this proposal are ongoing with both parties. We urge Kosovo and Serbia to take a historic leap forward in normalizing their relations” Mr Borel underlines.

In addition, he emphasizes that “since Putin has failed to conquer Ukraine, he obviously now intends to terrorize the Ukrainian population and destroy the country”, while stating that “it is important to extend the Black Sea Grain Initiative beyond 19 November. Russia must not use another pretext to renege on its obligations. It is not acceptable to use food and hunger as a weapon of war.”

Joseph Borel also makes reference to relationships with China. “For the EU, China remains, at the same time, a key economic partner, a general competitor and a systemic adversary. However, rivalry and competition are increasingly evident,” he notes. He adds that “we must manage competition with China in all areas, and at the same time aim for constructive cooperation where possible and in our interest. This includes global challenges such as peace and security, global health, the climate and biodiversity crisis and the conservation of natural resources, especially ahead of a critical week with the start of COP 27.”
