They have to accept our rules here,” Salman stressed as the country expects more than a million visitors for the World Cup.
Qatar’s World Cup ambassador and former footballer Khalid Salman has made a homophobic statement saying homosexuality is a “mental disorder”.
During an interview he gave to the German television network ZDF yesterday Monday and will be shown later today, Khalid Salman addressed the issue of homosexuality, describing it as a “mental damage”. He even emphasized as he said it is “haram”, i.e. forbidden.
“They have to accept our rules here,” Salman stressed.
It is a reminder that homosexuality is illegal in the conservative Muslim country, which is preparing to host the World Cup in less than two weeks. Some footballers have even raised concerns about the rights of fans traveling to the country, especially LGBT+ people and women, whose rights groups say Qatar’s laws are discriminatory.
The country is expecting more than a million visitors for the World Cup.
