Chilean authorities announced today that British astronomer Thomas Marsh, who had mysteriously disappeared on September 16 from the La Sigilla observatory, which he had visited as part of a scientific investigation, has been found dead.

For almost two months now, search and rescue crews they were “combing” the mountainous area in which the observatory is located, 600 kilometers north of the capital Santiago.

“After an intensive investigation (…) police officers found the lifeless body of the astronomer, who had been missing since September 16,” the police said in a post on Twitter, without mentioning the cause of death.

The three telescopes at the La Sigilla observatory, managed by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), are located at the southern edge of the Atacama Desert, at an altitude of 2,400 meters.
