US to increase anti-dumping duties on Russia

by

“This decision allows the US to apply the full force of its anti-dumping laws to address the market distortions caused by the Russian government’s increasing interference in its economy,” the Commerce Department said in a statement.

The US government announced Thursday that it no longer considers Russia a market economy within the bounds of anti-dumping proceedings, a decision that allows it to proceed with much higher import duties on Russian goods.

“This decision allows the US to apply the full force of its anti-dumping laws to address the market distortions caused by the Russian government’s increasing interference in its economy,” the Commerce Department said in a statement.

It will allow the Commerce Department “to more effectively combat Russian unfair trade practices that harm American manufacturers,” he added.

Washington accuses the Russian government of subsidizing businesses, causing a “competitive disadvantage for American industries trying to be competitive on a global scale.”

The subsidies also “lead to a distortion of prices and costs in Russia,” the statement added.

Anti-dumping measures aim to counterbalance, through additional duties, the sale of imported products at a price lower than the market price.

The Commerce Department said it would implement “an alternative method to calculate anti-dumping duties on imports originating in Russia, based on market prices and costs in countries with a comparable level of economic development that produce comparable goods.”

This is an indirect way to impose new US sanctions on Russia in response to the war in Ukraine, which is about to complete nine months.
