At least seven bridges – four of which cross the Dnipro River – have been destroyed in the last 24 hours – Among them one of the most important dams – Ukrainian officials warn residents not to return to their homes

Russian troops may have withdrawn from Kherson, however, photos taken today, Friday by US satellite imagery company Maxar show that several bridges crossing the Dnipro River have also suffered significant damage as well as a dam of great importance.

In particular, at least seven bridges – four of which cross the Dnipro River – have been destroyed in the last 24 hours. Among them a vehicle and a railway bridge located on top of the Nova Kakovka dam.

“Satellite images this morning reveal significant new damage to several bridges and the Nova Kakovka Dam following the Russian retreat from Kherson across the Dnipro River,” Maxar said in a statement.

Damage to one of the most important dams

At the same time, serious damage has been caused to one of the most important dams on the Dnipro River, the Nova Kakovka dam. Water flows through three slotted gates into the dam, where a large hydroelectric project is located. A photo, which appeared on social media on Friday afternoon, showed flowing water and parts of the bridge missing.

It is unclear who is responsible and how the damage to the bridges and dam was caused, but local channels reported on Thursday night that explosions were heard around the dam. It is believed that the damage was caused as Russian military forces retreated from the west bank of the Dnipro.

It is recalled that, earlier this week, Russia accused Ukraine of bombing the dam, with Kyiv responding in the same tone.

Ukrhydroenergo, which operates the hydroelectric plant, said it had not heard of any new damage to the dam and was unable to comment further.

Ukrainian officials warn them not to return to their homes

Although the Ukrainian armed forces have liberated large areas of land in Kherson, they do not appear to have taken control of the dam at Nova Kahovka. However, despite the excitement over the liberation of Kherson, Ukrainian officials are urging Ukrainian citizens not to return to their homes just yet.

“I understand that everyone is homesick and eager to return home as soon as possible,” noted the head of the Kherson regional military command, Yaroslav Yanusevic, but continued: “I ask you to wait a little. It’s too dangerous now. There is a high probability that the enemy will bomb the newly occupied settlements. From there the area should be examined by explosives experts. Unfortunately there are already many civilian casualties caused by explosive devices.”
