“It continues to break records, providing our nation with an unparalleled ability to test and rapidly integrate new space technologies,” said Boeing Vice President Jim Chilton.

The unmanned X-37B spacecraft landed yesterday Saturday in Cape Canaveral, Florida, after spending about two and a half years in orbit.

The X-37B, reminiscent of a space shuttle, was launched for the first time in 2010 and in its six missions to date has spent a total of more than 10 years in orbit, the manufacturer Boeing emphasizes in a press release.

“It continues to break records, providing our nation with an unparalleled ability to test and rapidly integrate new space technologies,” said Boeing Vice President Jim Chilton.

The X-37B, which was launched in top secrecy, was designed for the US Air Force by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

It reaches nine meters in length, has a wingspan of 4.5 m and is powered by solar panels.

Its mission was to evaluate the durability of certain materials and seeds in space, as well as the production of energy from solar radiation.
