Janet shared her story to prevent other women from doing something similar. “I went to Turkey because it was cheaper… Just don’t do it”
A 50-year-old British woman almost lost her life when she traveled to Turkey to have a tummy tuck – a cosmetic surgery that she found at a bargain price of just £4,300 when in Britain it costs at least £8,000.
50-year-old Janet Smalley – mother of three from Lancashire – decided to give herself the operation as a birthday present. She traveled to Istanbul, met with the doctor of the clinic she had chosen and before the abdominoplasty underwent liposuction of the abdomen, stomach and sides of the back – an operation necessary for the best result as she was told.
When he woke up from the operation, he was in excruciating pain but thought it was normal.
On the third day she left the clinic to continue her recovery at her hotel for a few more days. Then things started to get even worse. She was in excruciating pain, her teeth were chattering, her blood pressure was very low while her body was filled with red swollen blisters.
She contacted the clinic and the people in charge reassured her that again everything is normal, side effects of the anaesthetic.
Janet then started feeling like her whole body was on fire and sweating profusely but again the doctors told her it was all from… stress.

Finally, in a very bad physical condition, the 50-year-old British woman flew back to her home and – at the strong urging of her daughter – visited a hospital. There, the doctors were surprised to find that the woman had extensive sepsis and that her skin had died in several places, such as on her back and abdomen.
He was immediately hospitalized for nine days and continued antibiotic treatment at home. She also visited the hospital once a month for a long time to clean her wounds.

As for the clinic in Turkey, she refused to take responsibility for her condition because she went to a private doctor instead of returning to the clinic for rehabilitative care – even though she kept them informed of her condition while she was at the hotel in Istanbul and the officials assured her that there was nothing to worry about.
“They said they can’t take responsibility because I didn’t go to their aftercare center and they refused to talk to me again after that,” said the frustrated and angry 50-year-old woman.
Janet shared her story to prevent other women from going through something similar. “I wanted a tummy tuck and went to Turkey because it was cheaper… Just don’t do it. I regret it so much, it’s really not worth it,” he said.
