Acting Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov proposed that four 15-member groups of Ukrainian soldiers be trained at the Military Medical Academy in Sofia.

THE Bulgaria stated that it is ready to participate in the European Union’s mission to training Ukrainian soldiers, Acting Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters in Brussels today. In particular, he proposed that four 15-member groups of Ukrainian soldiers be trained at the Military Medical Academy in Sofia.

Stoyanov was in the Belgian capital to attend a meeting of European Union defense ministers earlier today.

The minister clarified that Bulgaria will contribute personnel and equipment to the training of the Ukrainian armed forces. He pointed out that it remains to be clarified what equipment will be provided. According to the minister, the assessment of the issue will be completed by the end of the week.

When asked about claims that the Netherlands is willing to provide Bulgaria with F-16 jets in exchange for the Bulgarian Air Force’s MiG-29s, Stoyanov said a letter had been sent to the Dutch government in June. The answer then was that the Netherlands had no possibility of providing F-16s to Bulgaria. “I had a meeting with the Dutch defense minister. They said they are ready to help train our F-16 pilots,” Stoyanov said.

According to Stoyanov, the MiG-29s are expected to remain in service until the end of 2023. “After that, I am skeptical about whether we can keep these aircraft in operational readiness,” the defense minister added.
