Of the 609,000 Ukrainians registered last August, 204,000 are children, while 109,000 have already found regular work with compulsory insurance contributions. In October, according to the same data, 96,000 refugees attended integration courses.
In a survey conducted by Munich’s Ifo Institute for Economic Research in October, one in five Ukrainian refugees said they have a stable job in Germany. Of these, more than half reported that they had more qualifications than their job required. “However, the willingness to work is very high among Ukrainian refugees. There are very few people who are not interested in working,” said Tetiana Panchenko, the head of the survey.
Also according to Ifo, 34% of respondents want to return to Ukraine, while 63% said they would like to stay in Germany for at least the next two years. In the first part of the survey conducted last June, those who preferred to stay in Germany were 52% and those who preferred to return to their homeland were 46%. The researchers also point out that those who come from the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine, where hostilities are more intense, are less willing to return to them than those who come from areas that are more peaceful. Moreover, Ukrainians with low income in their country are more willing to stay in Germany, looking for better opportunities. Family status also plays an important role in the intentions of refugees, as the exception is men who are allowed to leave Ukraine. The researchers expect an even greater increase in the percentage of those who will seek to stay in Germany, if family reunification becomes possible in the future.
