Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has strongly condemned North Korea’s “absolutely unacceptable” launch of a ballistic missile believed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile that landed inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) near the island of Hokkaido.
“The ballistic missile launched by North Korea appears to have landed inside our EEZ, west of Hokkaido,” Mr Kishida said, insisting the weapons test was “totally unacceptable”. He clarified that no damage has been reported to ships or aircraft that were moving in the area.
According to the Japanese Coast Guard, the missile fell about 210 kilometers off the coast of Hokkaido.
“We have certainly lodged a strong protest against North Korea, which is repeating its provocations with unprecedented frequency,” Mr Kishida said from Thailand, where he is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. His remarks were televised live in Japan.
“We emphasized (to Pyongyang) that we cannot under any circumstances tolerate such actions,” he insisted.
According to the Japanese Defense Ministry, the missile was launched in an easterly direction at around 10:14 (local time; 03:14 Greece time), Kyodo news agency reported.
Earlier, South Korea’s national defense general staff spoke of an ICBM launch from North Korea.
