The death toll from the 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the city of Siangjur in West Java, Indonesia, rose to 252 today, the local government said in an Instagram post today.

According to the previous tally announced by the disaster management agency BNPB, the death toll was 162, which shows how rapidly they are rising. .

According to local authorities, 31 people are still missing and 377 were injured, while 7,060 people were forced to leave their homes.

The deadly earthquake struck yesterday at 1:20 p.m. local time, centered on the city of Sianjur — home to about 175,000 residents.

Rescuers are scrambling to reach survivors trapped in the rubble amid continued aftershocks.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the city of Sianjur, about 75 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta.

West Java Governor Riduan Kamil told reporters that too many buildings had collapsed or been damaged. “There are residents trapped in isolated areas (…) so we assume that the number of injured and dead will increase,” he added.
