Units of Pyvdenukrainsk and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants shut down due to Russian raids

Three people died in Kyiv today – including a 17-year-old girl – and 11 others were injured by Russian shelling, while the Russian strikes cut off water and electricity supplies to the entire Kiev region.

The entire Kiev region is without electricity after Russian airstrikes targeted critical infrastructure, said Oleksii Kuleba, head of the regional military command.

Also, the water supply was interrupted today in Kyiv after the new Russian strikes, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced.

“Due to the shelling, the water supply has been cut off throughout Kyiv. Specialists (…) are working to restore the supply as soon as possible,” Klitschko said on Telegram, calling on residents to stock up on water.

Air-raid warning alarms sounded across Ukraine, and Ukrainian media reported air defense systems being activated in several parts of the country.

Earlier, 4 people died – among them an infant a few hours old in a bombed maternity hospital – from Russian strikes in Zaporizhia.

Ukrainian President Zelensky accused Moscow of spreading “terror” and vowed that Russia “will be held accountable for all the harm it has caused to our country”. At the same time, units of the Pivdenukrainsk and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants stopped operating due to the Russian raids.

Units at the Pyvdenukrainsk nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine have shut down due to a loss of power from a barrage of Russian airstrikes across Ukraine, Ukrainian nuclear power company Energoatom said today.

Due to the Russian strikes, units of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant in the western part of Ukraine were also disconnected from the electricity grid, regional governor Serhiy Hamali said.

Parts of this area have also been disconnected from the electricity grid and are without water supply, the governor said on Telegram.
