China announced today that it has reached 100,000 cases of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, which first appeared two years ago in the central city of Wuhan.
Apart from small, sporadic outbreaks, China has managed to limit the spread of coronavirus in its territory since the spring of 2020. Since then, the Chinese have returned to almost a normal way of life.
The Asian giant records only a few dozen cases every day, while other countries of the world count thousands of new infections.
China’s Ministry of Health today announced 77 new cases of covid-19 nationwide, bringing to 100,000 the total, official number of patients recorded since the beginning of the pandemic.
By comparison, Britain announced a record number of new cases yesterday, Wednesday, 78,610 within 24 hours.
However, unlike most countries, the Chinese do not include asymptomatic patients in the total number of cases. They count them separately, announcing their number every 15 days or so.
4,636 people have died in China due to covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. As of May 2020, only two patients in the country have officially died due to the disease.
An outbreak of the epidemic has been identified in recent days in the affluent, industrial province of Zhejiang, where 56 new cases have been reported today.
The Chinese can normally go to restaurants, shops, hospitals, tourist sites and work, but they must show a certificate on their mobile phone.
This appears in the form of a QR code which confirms that the person holding it has not moved to an area affected by covid-19 and has not come into contact with a case.
Vaccination against covid-19 is strongly encouraged in China, and is essentially imposed on business workers and civil servants.
According to the Ministry of Health, 2.63 billion doses of vaccine have been administered in the country of 1.4 billion.
However, it does not specify the percentage of the population that has been fully immunized.
