Anastasiades: We could supply natural gas to the EU sooner

Interview in the German newspaper Welt, entitled “There could be a faster flow of natural gas from the Mediterranean”

Nikos Anastasiadis gave an interview to the German “Welt am Sonntag” during his recent visit to Berlin.

In it he emphasizes that “the EU has already signed an agreement of intent with Israel and Egypt, in which it wants to support the transfer of natural gas from these countries, but also from all sources of natural gas, including Cyprus. Thus, there could be a mechanism that would encourage entrepreneurs to build similar infrastructures more quickly.”

Welt notes that the export of natural gas from the areas of the Cypriot coast is still in the preparation stage. Several international companies, including Chevron, Shell, Eni, Total and Qatar Oil, are taking part.

So far, it is estimated that the export of natural gas will begin in 2027. Only the Aphrodite field, one of the three areas located in Cypriot waters, can produce 5 to 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, it added.

It is reported that since the war broke out in Ukraine, the EU has been trying to wean itself off Russian natural gas and find new, non-problematic suppliers.

“Today, Turkey’s aggressive behavior in the Cypriot EEZ is the main obstacle to the start of natural gas production,” says Nikos Anastasiadis.

He continues, saying that “Turkey does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus, violates international maritime law and conducts illegal drilling in front of our coasts”.

During his visit to Berlin this week, President Anastasiades asked for the help of Germany and the EU for the solution of the Cyprus problem, the Welt newspaper points out.
