Protocol activated to stop its spread – 50 cases already recorded
The number of cases of diphtheria in England has increased this year, as British health authorities reported today, pointing out that dozens of infections were detected among asylum seekers. But they emphasize that the risk to the general public remains at a very low level.
In particular, 50 cases of diphtheria have been recorded among asylum seekers who arrived in England from the beginning of the year until last Friday (November 25). The average over the last decade is 2-11 cases per year.
THE diphtheria is an acute upper respiratory infection which is extremely rare in England due to regular vaccination programs since 1942.
The British government has come under fire for overcrowding and poor living conditions at the migrant accommodation facility in Manston, Kenv. Human rights organizations and a union of civil servants have threatened to take legal action over this issue.
After the diphtheria cases were released, Immigration Secretary Robert Jenrick told parliament that protocol was being followed to prevent the spread of infections, stressing that the British government would remain vigilant.
