The shocking photo released by the Spanish coast guard shows three men huddled on the rudder of a tanker below the waterline, traveling illegally for 11 days.
The tanker arrived in the Canary Islands from Lagos, Nigeria on Monday afternoon after an 11-day journey according to Marine Traffic and the three Nigerians are pictured perched on the helm of the Alithini II oil and chemical tanker .

The men were removed from the helm by the Spanish coast guard and taken to port where they were given first aid for dehydration and hypothermia, the coast guard said on Twitter.
Dangerous crossings to the Canary Islands from north Africa have increased dramatically since late 2019, after controls on Mediterranean routes were tightened. In October 2020, four people piled into the helm of an oil tanker from Lagos, hiding for 10 days before being discovered by police as the vessel entered Las Palmas.
