The Japanese government may buy as many as five hundred Tomahawk cruise missiles through the fiscal year that ends in March 2028 as it accelerates efforts to acquire counter-strike capabilities in the shadow of escalation with China in the China Sea, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Tokyo is preparing the biggest arms program of the Japanese armed forces since World War II, as it sees China’s military modernization and North Korea’s programs to develop ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons as threats.

Asked about Yomiuri’s report, Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno limited himself to saying that no final decisions had been made yet.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s government is preparing to review its national security strategy and other guidelines for the country’s defense by the end of the year. It has already announced that it will acquire missiles with a longer effective range in order to gain the ability to destroy targets at sea and on land.

Earlier this month, the Nikkei newspaper reported that Tokyo is also considering acquiring hypersonic missiles by 2030.

This week Prime Minister Kishida made it clear that Japan’s defense budget will reach 2% of GDP by 2027.
Increasing military spending remains a highly controversial issue in the Asian country.
