Germany: Deportation of two Russian diplomats after murder conviction

by

Germany deported two Russian diplomats after a court ruled on Wednesday that Moscow had ordered the murder of a Georgian citizen in 2019 in Berlin.

The news, according to cnn.com, was confirmed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Bayerbock. The court found Russian citizen Vadim Krasikov guilty of killing Tornike Khangoshvili, a Chechen Georgian citizen, in August 2019 in a park in central Berlin and sentenced him to life in prison.

The court said his crime had been ordered by the Russian government. “This assassination, ordered by a state as the court found today, is a serious violation of German law and the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Germany. “Therefore, we have just called the Russian ambassador for a discussion,” Bayerbok said in a statement. “The Russian ambassador has been informed that two members of the diplomatic corps will be declared persona non grata,” he added.

Later in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova spoke about the deportation and summoning of the ambassador. “Berlin’s hostile actions will not go unanswered. “A statement on this issue will be made soon,” she wrote on her Telegram channel.

The judge had earlier stressed the Russian state’s connection to Khangoshvili’s assassination. “No later than June 2019, state bodies of the central government of the Russian Federation took the decision to liquidate Tornike Khangoshvili in Berlin,” the judge said.
