Two dead and 30 missing from landslide in Brazil – Watch video

Two bodies were found today following a landslide on a road in southern Brazil, and rescue crews estimate that at least 30 people are missing, after heavy rain caused a river of mud to sweep some 20 tons of cars and trucks onto a road in the state of Parana.

Dramatic footage released by the fire service shows a huge brown wave in the middle of the green vegetation on the BR 367 highway. The mud washed away everything in its path, covering the road for tens of meters. The wrecked vehicles can be seen in the background.

Six people were rescued.

Due to the bad weather, the searches were delayed. The number of missing people is currently very difficult to ascertain.

“We cannot know the exact number because each vehicle can carry from one to five people. We assume that there are 30-50 missing,” explained fire chief Manuel Vasco in a press conference he gave.

The mayor of Guaratumba, the nearest town, is one of the survivors.

“It was terrible, the mountain fell on us and swept all the cars away. We live thanks to God,” said Roberto Justus, who was in his car with a colleague at the time of the disaster.

Firefighters are using unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft equipped with thermal cameras in the hope of locating survivors.

Last summer in Brazil dozens of people were killed in landslides, such as in Petropolis, a tourist resort near Rio, where more than 200 people died.
