London, Thanasis Gavos
The G7 Health Ministers held a teleconference on Thursday night to share information and estimates on the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The meeting was chaired by UK Health Minister Sajid Javid, who wrote on Twitter: “We have agreed that this is the biggest current threat to global public health and we are united in increasing vaccinations, both in our countries and abroad.”
The meeting followed the new record for coronavirus cases in one day in the United Kingdom, with 88,376 confirmed cases, a report that represents an increase of 74% compared to last Thursday.
One in four cases was in London, which is becoming the focus of the Omicron diaspora. In the British capital, the new variant is now responsible for 70% of all Covid cases, according to data from the UK Health and Safety Service. At the national level, 40% of coronavirus cases are attributed to Omicron.
The total number of confirmed cases of the new variant in the United Kingdom is now 11,708.
Meanwhile, late Thursday night, the decentralized Welsh government formalized a series of new restrictive measures aimed at curbing the Omicron diaspora.
From December 27, the nightclubs will be closed, while the obligation to keep two meters distance between people in shops and offices will return.
