Britain: Rail workers go on strike on Christmas Eve

by

The RMT has called strike action for four days from December 24-28 after negotiations with rail companies and Network Rail, which runs most of Britain’s rail network and related infrastructure, failed.

Rail workers in Britain are going on strike during the Christmas holiday season. The trade union representing them (RMT) announced on Monday that it would put the pay rise offer it received to a vote, urging its members to reject it, as strike action was called for over the Christmas period.

The RMT has called strike action for four days from December 24-28 after negotiations with rail companies and Network Rail, which runs most of Britain’s rail network and related infrastructure, failed.

“I’m sure the traveling public will be really disappointed, irritated and angry,” admitted RMT general secretary Mick Lynch. But he emphasized that the offer he received is “extremely harmful” to the members of the union.

On Sunday, the RMT revealed it had rejected a 4% pay rise offer for both 2022 and 2023, which was intended to prevent further strike action by rail workers.

Last week, the RMT announced that around 40,000 rail workers would go on strike in December and January, causing a headache for those planning to travel by train for their festive outings.
