According to documents seen by Reuters and two sources familiar with the investigation and the company’s operations, the federal probe, which was not previously known, was launched in recent months by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s inspector general at the request of a federal prosecutor. The investigation, one of the sources said, is focused on violations of animal welfare legislation, which governs how researchers treat animals used in tests.
