According to the coordinator of the swearing-in ceremony, the foreign ministry of the government of outgoing President Jáich Bolsonaro sent invitations to all countries with which Brazil has diplomatic relations.
Spain’s King Felipe and 11 other heads of state – including the presidents of Germany, Portugal and Argentina – have confirmed they will attend the inauguration of Brazil’s president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on New Year’s Day.
“We have received confirmation from the presidents of Germany, Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, East Timor and the King of Spain “, said the coordinator of the ceremony, Felipe Igreza.
According to him, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro has sent invitations to all countries with which Brazil has diplomatic relations.
As AFP points out, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro – whom Bolsonaro has called a “dictator” – did not receive an official invitation. But Felipe Igreza said Lula’s staff was considering “sending an invitation to Maduro as a representative of Venezuela.”
A number of former heads of state and government are also expected at the inauguration of Lula, who was elected to a third term as Brazil’s president after ruling from 2003 to 2010.
Hundreds of thousands of people will attend the ceremony in Brasilia, which will mark the centre-left’s return to power after Dilma Rousseff stepped down in 2016.
