The French government today called for an increase in the vaccination rate for Covid-19, just days before the festive season, also calling on French citizens to “re-wear their masks on public transport”.
The Minister of Health, François Bron spoke of a “serious situation” as in France, as in many neighboring countries, a triple epidemic is observed: of Covid-19, influenza and bronchiolitis.
“Since the beginning of October only 2.8 million people have been vaccinated for Covid-19, they are far less compared to our European neighbours,” commented Bron referring to the booster dose campaign. Regarding the flu, 9.9 million vaccines have been made available from pharmacies, i.e. a 5% decrease compared to 2021.
Consequently, “the French are less protected this year”, the minister underlined.
Recalling that during the first wave of Covid-19 the French applauded health workers every day, Bron said: “Tonight, I ask you to help them by getting the vaccine and keeping your distance.”
The minister also insisted that it is important to observe certain hygiene rules: washing hands, regularly ventilating the premises, wearing a mask in closed spaces, such as in trains and other means of public transport. But he ruled out the possibility of making the use of the mask mandatory again, as requested by some health workers.
On Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron wore a mask during a commute, saying it was necessary to “remember some habits” due to the increase in Covid-19 cases. But he also said that the use of the mask will be done “on a voluntary basis”.
The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed the lives of 158,000 people in France and more than 6.6 million worldwide, according to figures from the World Health Organization.
