US: Open to climate program adjustments to reassure Europeans

by

The EU has been worried for months about the consequences of US President Joe Biden’s $420 billion Climate IRA program approved last summer by Congress.

The United States is open to “adjustments” to its climate program to reassure Europeans worried about business fleeing to the US, John Kerry, Washington’s special envoy on climate change, told the BBC today.

“I don’t believe the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will be weakened,” said John Kerry. “But to consider in what points suitable modifications or adjustments can be made, without prejudice to our efforts? I’m sure President Biden is ready to look into it.”

The European Union has been worried for several months about the consequences of US President Joe Biden’s $420 billion Climate IRA program approved last summer by Congress.

The program provides, among other things, reforms and subsidies in favor of companies operating in the US, mainly in the fields of electric cars and renewable energy sources. The European Union is concerned and calls for more “coordination” fearing the flight of European businesses to the US.

The issue was at the center of French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Washington.

Speaking to the BBC, John Kerry also referred to the controversial plan to open a new coal mine which was approved this week in the UK. It is the first project of this kind in the country in thirty years.

“Obviously people will be critical because the general idea is that coal mines, whatever they are, are moving in the opposite direction to what most people want,” he said of London’s decision on the mine.

While he said he wanted to understand the UK plan first before commenting on it, he warned about the image such a plan sends internationally.

“If you go around the world telling others to leave their coal underground, it’s hypocritical to announce at the same time that you’re opening a new mine in a country like the UK,” he said.
