Washington is sending its first high-level delegation to Beijing

The US administration will send its first high-level delegation to China since last month’s commitment to Bali by the Chinese president Xi Jinping and its US counterpart Joe Biden for the rewarming of relations between their countries.

US Under Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Daniel Krittenbrink will accompany National Security Council Director for China and Taiwan Laura Rosenberger from December 11 to 14, the US State Department announced.

They will visit China, South Korea and Japan.

In China, Krittenbrink will be tasked with taking over from Joe Biden after the US president met with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali in mid-November.

The two leaders then pledged “to continue to responsibly manage the competition between our countries and to explore potential areas of cooperation,” according to the US State Department.

Biden and Xi had mainly discussed recent issues of disagreement, such as the future of Taiwan, US restrictions on imports of Chinese technological products or even China’s influence maneuvers in the world.

Daniel Krittenbrink will also prepare the visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, which is scheduled for early 2023 and will be the first by a senior US diplomat to China in four years.
