The Israeli army admitted tonight that it “accidentally” killed a Palestinian teenager during an operation in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank.
Early this morning, the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry announced the death of Jaina Zakarna, 16, who was shot in the head in an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and local militants.
Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior Palestinian government official, called for an immediate investigation into the “execution” of the teenager, whose funeral was held a few hours later in the presence of hundreds of people.
“From the preliminary investigation we concluded that the young girl was killed by inadvertent fire from soldiers who were targeting armed men on a rooftop in this area,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
According to her family, Jayna was on the roof of her home when the shooting took place. She was found dead after the Israeli forces withdrew.
“She went up (to the roof) to look for her cat and never came back.
Then her brother came up to find her, opened the door and saw her lying here on her back,” said the girl’s uncle, 28-year-old Yasser Mahmud Zakarna. “He was shot in the head, in the face and twice in the chest,” he added.
Israel’s Defense Minister Benny Gantz expressed his regret over the death of the minor “as well as the death of any person who is not involved in terrorism”.
Two other Palestinians were injured during this operation, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The Israeli military said suspects set off explosive devices and fired at the soldiers. Three people were arrested. “The soldiers responded with live bullets against the gunmen,” he added.
