Taiwan: China’s nuclear-powered bombers breached island’s air defense reconnaissance zone

Taiwan complains that Beijing has sharply increased the number of violations in the southwestern part of its zone in the past two years

New tension in South China Sea. Eighteen Chinese nuclear-capable bombers have violated Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ), the government in Taipei announced Tuesday, a record violation for it, as tensions with in Beijing remain high.

Twenty-one aircraft entered Taiwan’s ADIZ over the past 24 hours, the defense ministry said, including 18 Xian H-6 bombers (the Chinese version of the Soviet-designed Tupolev Tu-16 strategic bomber).

ADIZ of Taiwan it is considerably wider than the airspace of the island itself. It includes part of Chinese airspace, as well as part of mainland China’s airspace.

Taipei complains that Beijing has sharply increased the number of violations in the southwestern part of its zone in the past two years. But the ADIZ breach it announced today marks by far the largest incursion by Chinese H-6 bombers since it began publishing daily statistics in September 2020, according to a special database maintained by Agence France-Presse.

Last week, China imposed new bans on food, alcohol and fishery imports from Taiwan.

Taiwan’s prime minister, Su Cheng-chang, accused Beijing of violating international trade rules by imposing “discriminatory treatment” against the island.

It is rare for more than five H-6 bombers to sortie in a day; however, violations have increased dramatically in recent weeks. Last month, 21 such bombers entered Taiwan’s ADIZ; this year, 23 violations are recorded.

The island of 23 million inhabitants lives under the constant threat of invasion by the Chinese military. China after the end of the civil war (1949) designates Taiwan as its breakaway province, destined to one day be reunited with the mainland — by force if necessary.
