A Eurofighter fighter from the 37th Wing, stationed at Trapani Birgi Military Airport, crashed five miles from its base while starting the landing procedure at Trapani Airport. The pilot was not found.
The Eurofighter Typhoon military aircraft crashed at the mouth of the Birgi River, near the tourist center of Rocche Draele.
The alarm went off at around 6pm and Trapani airport was closed to civilian flights. The Dat flight from Pantelleria, which was due to land in Birgi after 7pm, was diverted to Palermo. A helicopter from the 82nd Sar Division immediately took off to coordinate the search from above, while firefighters, ambulances and other emergency vehicles rushed to the crash site.
The rescue operation is characterized as difficult due to the fire that has enveloped the wreckage of the aircraft. There were no injuries citizens and there is still no information on the causes of the accident.
