London, Thanasis Gavos

An operation by the British coastguard and the French navy has been underway since dawn to locate and rescue people who were on board a small boat in an attempt to cross the frozen English Channel to the British coast.

Between 30 and 50 migrants are believed to have been on board the boat, with authorities fearing the death toll.

The incident was reported shortly before 4am UK time while the boat was off the coast of Kent. In south-east England the temperature at the time was 1 degree Celsius, with the cold being even more intense at sea.

Lifeboats, coast guard rescuers, helicopters, ambulances and the police are involved in the operation.

A British government spokesman said the incident had occurred in British waters and was being dealt with by a coordinated operation.

Britain’s Home Secretary Suella Braverman said today that she had been made aware of the “sad incident” in the English Channel, adding that her thoughts “were with all those involved”.

“I am aware of the unfortunate incident in the English Channel this morning and have been continuously updated while agencies respond and ascertain the facts,” Braverman said on Twitter. “My thoughts are with all those involved in the incident.”
