Indonesia reassures tourists: ‘Extramarital affairs are allowed for you’

by

Bali’s tourism chief said foreigners should not postpone visiting the island and that hotels will not ask customers for a “marriage certificate”.

The news that Indonesia has outlawed extramarital affairs for everyone within its territory made the rounds of the world and troubled many people…

In the initial announcements, the country’s authorities probably did not take into account that their country is an attractive destination for tourists, causing confusion among tourism professionals in popular resorts such as Bali.

Wayan Koster, the governor of the island, had to clarify the provisions of the law, assuring tourists that they should not worry.

According to Koster, the ban does not apply to them. “Indonesia’s newly ratified criminal law will not endanger visitors to Bali,” he said.

Prosecution for extramarital sex will only be possible if the parents, partners or children of the accused take legal action.

Also, Bali’s tourism chief, Tjo-korda Bagus Pemayun, said that foreigners should not postpone their visit to the island and that hotels will not ask their customers for “proof of marriage”.

Indonesia is the country with the largest number of Muslims in the world, about 231 million people (87%).
