“Ankara should hear this, the mind that intervened in the court should hear this…” said the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu after he was sentenced to 2 years and 7 months in prison

“I want you to promise me that in 2023 everything will be more beautiful. Let Ankara hear this, let the mind that intervened in the court hear this…” said the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglou, as reported by the SKAI correspondent from Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis, after his sentence to 2 years and 7 months, which if finalized will also mean deprivation of his political rights.

For her part, Meral Aksener, president of the Good Party, said in her turn “We are not afraid and say long live freedom, curse tyranny.”

It is recalled that Imamoglu – a figure in the Turkish opposition and a rising star of the Turkish political scene when he was elected in 2019 – was on trial for “insult” and he himself had described his trial as “political”, as it was being held a few months before the June 2023 elections in Turkey .

The Istanbul mayor was among the few opposition leaders polled to beat Erdogan, who is facing a severe economic crisis and inflation officially running at around 85 percent. With Imamoglu now barred from politics, the opposition alliance is in a difficult position as it has yet to name a common candidate for the presidential election, which is due to be held in six months.
