Qatar’s pearl fishing history inspired Australian office Koichi Takada Architects to create the interior of Jiwan, a restaurant inside the Qatar National Museum designed by Jean Nouvel. Over four million Swarovskis form a ceiling installation at the Doha restaurant serving concoctions by renowned French chef Alain Ducasse.

“The palette of materials we used was very much about paying homage to Qatar’s unique landscape – where the desert meets the sea – as well as the iconic architecture,” Koichi Takada, founder of the office, told Dezeen. “We chose a reflective finish for the ceiling to draw the reflection of the Persian deep into the space, but also to reflect the gentle movement of the four million Swarovski crystals that dance suspended from the ceiling.”

Jiwan, which can seat 130 customers inside and another 130 on its terrace, has pale pink walls that curve like an oyster shell. Another wink on the subject of pearl fishing.

In total, the office has designed six interiors for the Qatar National Museum, one of the architectural landmarks completed in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
