Over 14 million tons of grain have been exported so far from Ukrainian ports thanks in the Black Sea Initiative, a high-ranking United Nations official responsible for the relevant discussions said today.

During a press conference in Geneva, the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebecca Greenspan highlighted the impact of this agreement between Ukraine and Russia which has led to a decrease for seven consecutive months in international prices for food products.

We surpassed 14 million tonnes… distributed thanks to the Black Sea Grains InitiativeGreenspan said, emphasizing that these are volumes that are “very important to the market”.

The so-called Black Sea agreement, signed on July 22 for 120 days by the UN, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey, allowed to ease the global food crisis caused by the war and was renewed for four months.

Greenspan rejected accusations by those who say Ukraine’s grain exports go to rich countries rather than developing ones. She explained that first of all, grain exports for livestock should be differentiated from those intended for human consumption.

Let’s be clear, most animal feed never goes to developing countries. This is mainly an import of developed countries“, she said.

On the other, “developing countries have greatly benefited from the Black Sea Grains Initiative” in terms of food products intended for human consumption, she said. Thus, two-thirds of wheat exports are destined for developing countries, the official explained.

However, Greenspan, who is a former vice president of Costa Rica, admitted that the volumes of exported grains will again remain below the level of 2021.There is still a way to go“, he stated.

As on other occasions, Greenspan also expressed fears of a fertilizer shortage next year. But time is pressing, because the sowing period cannot be extended. “That is why we are working so hard to be able to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.“, she said.
