Japan revises its defense doctrine: Possibility of pre-emptive strikes – The “sources of concern” for the country

Japan has overhauled its national security strategy, allowing its armed forces to acquire what it calls a ‘counter-attack capability’

In the radical revision of the defender of her doctrine, which effectively foresees the possibility of pre-emptive attacks, Japan proceeded on Friday with an “eye” on China, North Korea and Russia.

The updated ones three key security documents and defense allow Japan’s armed forces to “acquire the ability to strike targets on enemy territory to prevent attacks, which is termed a ‘counter-attack capability,'” Kyodo News reported.

It also authorizes the government to “allocate about 43 trillion yen (about $315 billion) for defense budgets over five years from fiscal year 2023.”

Japan will also “maintain an exclusively defense-oriented security policy” in addition to possibly “revising strict guidelines for the export of defense equipment.”

The new national security strategy considers China as the “greatest strategic challenge” and calls North Korea a “serious, more imminent threat than before” and Russia a “serious source of security concern.”
