The German Press on the developments on the Ukrainian front – Chancellor Solz’s statements
On Friday, Russian forces fired 76 missiles at Ukrainian targets, the largest attack since the beginning of the war. In an interview published in today’s Süddeutsche Zeitung, Mr chancellor Olaf Solz he says characteristically: “Due to Russia’s military failure, the risk of a further escalation of the war is great. We have laid a strong foundation against nuclear escalation. […] But that did not stop Putin from continuing the war with merciless brutality, in violation of international law. Russia must realize that this cannot continue. Putin must end the war, withdraw the troops and thereby create the possibility for mutual understanding.”
“We will not allow Russia to dictate the military aid we will provide to Ukraine,” a Pentagon spokesman said via the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, reminding, however, that the US is willing to provide all material aid to Ukraine, but not manpower.
The German media also speaks of a coordinated multi-year plan by Russia that has been implemented and is already achieving part of its goals: “the idea was not only military, but also economic and political: to weaken Ukraine and cause a refugee wave to the EU. The main goal of the “special operation” is on the one hand to make Ukraine unattractive to the Russians and on the other hand to make Ukraine suffer more than Russia. The goal has been achieved so far – millions of people have left the country. Despite the sanctions and protests since February 24, the recession in Ukraine this year stands at 35%, while in Russia it is around 15%. The Kremlin rulers are trying to turn Ukraine into an abandoned ruin.”
