Cavusoglu’s irritation: Sweden defied Erdogan’s threats – does not extradite journalist to Turkey

by

The extradition of Bulent Kenes was personally requested by Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a condition for Sweden’s accession to NATO

Annoyed with Sweden, he appeared today, Tuesday Mevlut Cavusoglu. The Turkish Foreign Minister characterized as “very negative measureĀ» the Swedish Supreme Court’s refusal to extradite journalist Bulent Kenes (bottom photo), which was personally requested by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“The rejection of our request for the extradition of Bulent Kenes is a very negative measure. Those who participated in the coup must be sent back to Turkey,” the minister said, referring to the failed coup attempt of July 2016.

Cavusoglu made this statement at a press conference in Ankara. Last month Erdogan named Kenes as a person Ankara wants extradited from Sweden as a condition for Ankara to approve Stockholm’s NATO membership, with the Swedish court apparently overruling him.

Kenes is a journalist whom Ankara claims is a member of the organization it accuses of orchestrating the failed coup attempt of 2016.
