The president of Chile announced the opening of an embassy in Palestine

Palestine is “a people that exists, that resists, that has a history,” said Gabriel Borich

The Chilean president Gabriel Boris announced on Wednesday night that he would open an embassy in Palestine during his term, in a Christmas celebration with the country’s Palestinian community, the largest outside the Arab world.

“One of the decisions we have taken as a government, I think we have not made it public, I will risk it (…) is how we will raise the level of our official representation in Palestine. From the mandate we have today, we will open an embassy during (the term of) our government,” Mr Boric said.

Chile currently only has a representative office in Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. It opened in April 1998. Palestine, on the other hand, maintains an embassy in Santiago.

In 2011, Chile recognized Palestine as a state and later advocated its admission to UNESCO.

Palestinians in Chile have organized mass demonstrations to protest Israeli bombing of the Palestinian Territories.

Palestine is “a people that exists, that resists, that has a history,” Gabriel Borich said yesterday.

Chile and Palestine developed a close relationship after thousands of Palestinians immigrated to the Latin American country during the 20th century. Their community there numbers over 300,000 — the largest Arab population outside the Middle East — and coexists peacefully with the influential Israeli community of about 30,000.

The Palestinians of Chile are mainly active in trade and in the weaving sector. Their descendants descended, successfully, into politics.

Chile’s Palestino soccer team, founded by Arab settlers in 1920, is watched by thousands of supporters in the Palestinian Territories.
