Brazil’s President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said today that he will inherit a country “in a state of poverty” when he takes office on January 1, as he announced the names of 16 cabinet ministers.
“We are inheriting a country in a state of poverty, where even the simplest things were not done because the president preferred to lie rather than rule,” Lula said.
Geraldo Alkmin, the centrist vice-president who will take over as Minister of Industry and Trade, denounced, without elaborating, “the fragmentation of the state” and estimated that Lula will have to perform a “herculean task”.
The president-elect, who will take over the reins of Latin America’s strongest economic power, announced 16 of the total 37 ministers of his government. Nicia Tridante, the president of the Fiocruz institute that played a key role in the fight against Covid-19, will take over the Ministry of Health. The women’s affairs ministry goes to Cida Gonçalves, who had served in both previous governments under Lula (2003-10) as well as during the presidency of Dilma Rousseff (2011-16).
Aniele Franco, sister of black activist and councilor Mariele Franco, who was murdered in 2018, has been appointed Minister of Racial Equality. Singer Margaret Menezes takes over the Ministry of Culture, which was abolished during the presidency of far-right Jair Bolsonaro.
