Buses from Texas drop off immigrants near Kamala Harris’ Washington home

by

Some Republican governors, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, are sending immigrants to Democratic-controlled northern US cities.

Buses from the southwest Texas border dropped off dozens of migrants this weekend near US Vice President Kamala Harris’ Washington home amid subzero temperatures, migrant aid groups said today.

About 110-130 immigrants seeking asylum in the US – many of them families with children – were bussed by Texas officials, said Tatiana Laborde, the director of SAMU First Response, a relief organization based in Washington. The organizations had been informed of the migrants’ journey and were waiting for their arrival late Saturday night to distribute blankets and lead them to a church in the Capitol Hill district of the federal capital.

Aides to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott were not available to comment on whether the state coordinated the transfer. Some Republican governors, including Abbott, are sending immigrants to Democratic-controlled northern US cities. Texas has moved thousands of people to Washington, New York and Chicago.

Laborde said last week nine buses dropped off migrants in Washington. “Lately, we see an increase in the number of people from Ecuador and Colombia,” he said, explaining that until recently many Venezuelans were arriving by bus. Many of the new arrivals seek to reach New York or New Jersey where they have relatives or hope local communities will help them.
