Queen Elizabeth has canceled her stay at her home in Sandringham, in the east of England, as she usually does at Christmas, which she will celebrate this year at Windsor Tower, near London, the British media reported today.
The 95-year-old monarch made this “personal decision after a mature thought”, explained a source close to the monarchy, speaking to the British news agency Press Association, according to which this choice “reflects a careful approach”.
“Members of the (royal) family will go to Windsor at Christmas time,” said the same anonymous source, adding that “reasonable precautions and all appropriate guidelines will be followed.”
The queen, to whom doctors recommended he rested in October after a night in the hospital, and close family members traditionally spend Christmas in Sandringham, where they go to church on Christmas day.
The queen had already decided cautiously not to organize the traditional family gathering of about fifty people this Tuesday at Windsor Tower, henceforth her main residence, for the first time since the death of her husband Philip in April.
In the face of the rise of the Omicron variant in Britain, which today recorded 91,743 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours, Britons are worried and cancel their outings to spend Christmas with their families, but others oppose the harsh restrictions.
Today, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that he “will not hesitate to take more restrictive measures” to curb the spread of the Omicron variant, but did not go ahead with what some have called for.
“Right now, we want people to focus,” the conservative leader told television at the end of the cabinet meeting, referring to ventilation and mask use.
According to authorities, at least 14 people infected with the Omicron variant of Covid-19 have died so far and 129 are being treated in Britain, one of the countries already hit hard by the pandemic in Europe with more than 147,000 dead (+44).
