The iconic ancient monument was closed to tourists and ordered to be evacuated by authorities for their safety
Extreme weather affects Jordan, with the result that the archaeological monument of Petra is also flooded. Footage and photos show water pouring into the gorge at the temple’s entrance as panicked tourists flee
An estimated 1,700 people, tourists and locals, were ordered to evacuate the area for their safety.
Three people were also injured when a bus they were traveling in overturned in Ma’an, south of Jordan, during torrential rain.
It is recalled that in 2018 the country was hit by catastrophic floods that killed 13 people
The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) evacuated visitors from Petra as heavy downpours flooded the archaeological site.
