Russian forces and paramilitaries of the Wagner organization have been trying since the summer, so far without success, to conquer Bahamut, at the cost of heavy losses
“Few civilians” still live in the city of Bakhmut, which has become the epicenter of heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.
“Last year, 70,000 people lived there. Now, there are only a few civilians left,” Zelensky said in a Facebook post, without specifying the number of civilians still in that city.
Russian forces and paramilitaries of the Wagner organization have been trying since the summer, so far without success, to conquer Bahamut, at the cost of heavy losses on both sides and significant destruction.
“There is no place (in the city) that is not covered in blood. Not an hour passes without the horrendous roar of artillery echoing,” Zelensky said, accompanying his message with several photos showing the extent of the destruction in the city.
AFP journalists, who have visited Bahamut on several occasions in recent weeks, have documented these very difficult living conditions, as the town no longer has access to water or electricity.
Zelensky went there on December 20 on the eve of the visit tth in Washington, where he presented the US Congress with a Ukrainian flag given to him by soldiers at the front.
