Timur Bekmansurov pleaded guilty, asking judges not to sentence him to life in prison

A Russian court today sentenced to life imprisonment the perpetrator of last year’s attack on the university in the city of Perm, in the Urals, which claimed the lives of six people and injured dozens of others.

19-year-old Timur Bekmansurov was found guilty of the carnage he caused on September 20, 2021. Holder of a firearms license, the law student went armed that Monday to Perm University and started shooting, spreading death.

Some students jumped out of windows to escape, others locked themselves in the halls.

Six people were killed and dozens injured before the gunman was disarmed and arrested by police.

In recent years, incidents of gun violence have increased in Russia, with President Putin referring to a phenomenon “imported” from the US.

In May 2021, a 19-year-old killed nine people at a school in the city of Kazan. He was arrested and found to have a license for a semi-automatic weapon.

In October 2018, a high school student killed 19 people before killing himself at a high school in the city of Kerch, on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula.
