As the snow recedes and roads open, rescuers continue to search for people inside “buried” cars and frozen houses that have been blocked for so many days.
The death toll from the polar “bomb” and the epic snowstorm that hit the northern US – and especially the state of New York – in the past few days has now reached 40, and authorities fear that the final tragic toll will be higher.
The largest number of victims is in Buffalo, the city that was literally in the “eye” of the historic bad weather a week ago.

The National Guard, police and officers from other agencies are going door-to-door to check on homes and people left without power in sub-zero temperatures for days, constantly facing the possibility of finding more piles.
