London, Thanasis Gavos

Boris Johnson is considered by the people of the United Kingdom to be less credible as a source of information and guidance about the pandemic than social media, according to a poll by the Independent.

In particular, almost six out of ten, 59% of respondents, say they do not trust the British Prime Minister at all, while for social networking platforms the percentage of distrust is 55%.

Scientists have the highest levels of trust in the pandemic, with 71%, and relatives and friends, with 77%.

More broadly and beyond the pandemic, 40% say they have a great lack of confidence in what the Prime Minister is saying and an additional 20% are “quite” skeptical. Only 9% say they trust him a lot.

Nearly three in ten, or 28 percent, also say they are less likely to take action against the coronavirus as a result of complaints about numerous parties on Downing Street amid a ban.

There is also a 10% who have already canceled their Christmas plans and a further 25% who have reduced them due to concerns about Omicron.

At the same time, half of the 2,096 respondents are in favor of a partial two-week lockdown to stop the transmission chain of the new variant, against a percentage of 26% that opposes.

The prospect of an indefinite lockdown brings a tie to the poll, at 38% for both views.

The measure of the vaccination certificate for entering areas with large crowds, without even the alternative of the appearance of a negative rapid test, is supported by 65% of respondents. 70% want mandatory mask use in all covered public spaces and 55% mandatory teleworking, with the exception of those working in critical areas and infrastructure only.

As for the measure that seems to be considered for the days immediately after Christmas, 55% want a ban on indoor meetings for people who do not live together or do not form the so-called support bubble, compared to 27% who disagree.

In addition to adhering to COVID-19 protection measures, the poll also shows the pessimism of the British, as only 21% of respondents believe that the situation regarding the pandemic will be better in 2022.
