Lula said on Twitter that he had held separate meetings with Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of Russia’s upper house, and Yulia Sviridenko, the Ukrainian deputy prime minister, calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.
The president-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, met yesterday Saturday with representatives of Ukraine and Russia, a few hours before his inauguration, calling for an immediate end to the war between the two countries, which broke out on February 24, 2022.
Lula said via Twitter that he had separate meetings with Valentina Matviyenko, the president of the Federation Council (Russia’s upper house) and Yulia Sviridenko, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister.
The two envoys, who will represent their countries at Lula’s inauguration, met with him and with the new Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira later today, attest to photographs uploaded by the center-left president-elect.
Lula said he told Ms Matvienko that he wished for “peace”, “for the parties to find common ground and end the armed conflict”.
He added that Mrs. Sviridenko presented him with a report on the situation in her country.
“In Brazil we have a tradition of defending the (territorial) integrity of all countries” and “we will talk to whoever is possible for peace to come,” Lula said.
Brazil’s president-elect had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in December about bilateral relations.
Lula is trying to project the message that “Brazil is coming back” on the international stage, after four years in which the country under far-right President Jair Bolsonaro has been the target of much criticism for his environmental policy, his relentless attacks on the electoral system coke.
Lula is expected to visit the US, China and Argentina very soon after taking office. Sources say that both German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron plan to visit Brasilia possibly even in January.
