920 civilian bodies were found in the area, including 25 children according to the regional police chief
Local authorities announced yesterday that they had discovered 25 torture camps in the area around the city Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine after release of the area from Russian occupation.
In the camps, Russian soldiers detained and tortured civilians, regional police chief Volodymyr Timoshko said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Some of the detainees had been tortured with electric shocks and others had their fingers broken, he said.
The area around Kharkiv had been under the occupation of Russian troops for months. Russian forces withdrew from there in early September after a Ukrainian counterattack.
Since then, 920 civilian bodies, including 25 children, have been discovered in the liberated area, Timosko added. The victims were killed by Russian soldiers, he stressed.
According to investigations by Ukrainian authorities, Russian forces have also committed war crimes in other territories they occupied in Ukraine.
In Bucha, on the outskirts of Kiev, after Russian forces withdrew from the area at the end of March, bodies of civilians who had been executed in cold blood were discovered.
